Once upon a time in China
Monday, May 09, 2011
I dedicate this post to all who grew up in China in the early 1980s.
The film is called “英俊少年”, its actually title is Heintje: Once the Sun Will Be Shining Again (1970)
Zwei Kleine Sterne: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rtr_ftqVtaw
Original lyric | Literal translation |
| It was night, at the window I asked you softly, Will you always stay by me? Ah, my child, you said, There are two little stars In the big sky They will go with you well into the wide, wide world. These two little stars are my very last goodbye. Oh, think of me when I have to go away! |
Kleine Kinder Kleine Sorgen: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eP4y8NpLmQY
Original lyric | Literal translation | Chinese (not mine) |
| little children, little worries, and a house full of sunshine. Little children, little worries, Can it be so forever? But go by so fast the years, your little child will soon be big, and love the little worries, that are left behind. little children, little worries, and a bit of grief only. But there comes a morning, and since both (boy and worry) are big. |
Letzte Rose un unserm Garten: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=04AwI4tQ2oY
Original lyric | Literal translation |
So alleine musst du verblühn So alleine musst du verblühn | Last rose in our garden I found hidden among the leaves Still want to wait for the sun But the autumn wind blows over the land Long since faded have all flowers All its glory long past Last Rose in our garden So alone you have to wither Long since faded, all flowers All its glory long past Last Rose in our garden So alone you have to wither So alone you have to wither |
Compare this with the original Irish version written by Thomas Moore:
'Tis the last rose of summer
Left blooming alone;
All her lovely companions
Are faded and gone;
No flower of her kindred,
No rosebud is nigh,
To reflect back her blushes,
To give sigh for sigh.
I'll not leave thee, thou lone one!
To pine on the stem;
Since the lovely are sleeping,
Go, sleep thou with them.
Thus kindly I scatter,
Thy leaves o'er the bed,
Where thy mates of the garden
Lie scentless and dead.
So soon may I follow,
When friendships decay,
From Love's shining circle
The gems drop away.
When true hearts lie withered
And fond ones are flown,
Oh! who would inhabit,
This bleak world alone?
Another song that is more of an extra-diegetic thing:
Deine Liebe, Deine Treue: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yQP_UEWg68Y
